Description:
These “bronze” coins, actually made with a brass alloy, were among the earliest in the Greek Empire. They were minted on the northern coast of Greece by the Aegean Sea in Maroneia, an ancient Greek city in the province of Thrace. Maroneia was well known for the fine quality of its wine and horse breeding was equally important. The obverse of the coin shows a spirited, prancing horse and vines with full branches of grapes surrounded by a square appear on the reverse.
