This 4th Century BC coin was hand struck in Macedonia, which was home to Alexander the Great and the seat of his throne. Alexander also known as Alexander III of Macedon was one of the most successful military commanders of all time and it is presumed that he was undefeated in battle. By the time of his death he had conquered the Persian Empire and his legacy lived on long after him ushering in centuries of Greek settlement and Hellenistic culture over distant areas. Alexander became legendary as a classical hero in the mold of Achilles, and features prominently in the history of Greek and non-Greek cultures. The obverse of this coin shows the Greek hero Hercules wearing a lionís skin of armor. He was important to Alexander's hereditary line as they claimed to be descended from the mythological hero. The reverse shows Zeus, the King of the Greek gods, seated on a throne. Zeus was the most powerful of all the Greek gods and his appearance on Alexander's coinage symbolizes Alexander's status as leader of all the Greeks.
